  8. This book, published by Loompanics, has been mentioned here
  9. a number of times.

  11. I had the opportunity to briefly look it over last weekend.
  12. Naturally, I headed straight for the chem section, a chapter 
  13. entitled, "Extractions", or something.
  14.  
  15. Well, I must say that I am completely unimpressed with this
  16. bozo Dekorne's abilities.  The information he presents is
  17. riddled with errors and nonsense.  In fact, I have seen much
  18. better stuff here in alt.drugs.  And you don't pay $20 for
  19. alt.drugs.

  21. An example is his declaring lemon juice to be acetic acid.
  22. Bzzzzt! Thank you for playing.  It's citric acid.

  24. My memory is hazy, but there were other more serious errors.
  25. He suggests starting fluid as a source for ether, without
  26. mentioning that the presence of lubricating oil in this stuff
  27. makes it worthless for extractions.

  29. He then fails to mention that if you extract with ether (and
  30. many other solvents), you had better vent your sep funnel 
  31. often due to the pressure buildup from the ether vapour.  
  32. Much grief awaits those who don't.

  34. With idiocies like this, one wonders if he's even done the thing
  35. he claims.

  37. Another recipe extracts the drugs out, calcines the extracted
  38. plant material to ash, and adds the drug back for consumption.
  39. If you think this is a useful procedure, I've got news for you.

  41. His extractions all the standard acid-base extraction.  [...]
  42. posted here (for free) a much better procedure that started
  43. with a methanol extraction, followed by an acid-base extraction.
  44. The initial methanol extraction reduces the volumes needed in
  45. the acid-base extraction.

  47. Loompanics makes its money selling junk like this.  A lot of
  48. their stuff is amateurish garbage put out by crooks, phonies,
  49. and posseurs.  But these are books about doing illegal
  50. things, so who's going to complain, right?

  79. Since my last review of this crappy, rip-off
  80. Loompanics book, I've collected a few more
  81. points of complaint with regards the
  82. "Chemical Extraction" chapter.
  83.  
  84. 1) His clear as mud use of ratios when
  85.    he's talking about a 3:1 ratio of
  86.    DMT : harmaline.  Very confusing
  87.    for the amateur.
  88.  
  89. 2) use of a PVC tube when collecting ether
  90.    (I'm pretty sure that ether affects PVC,
  91.     contaminating the ether)
  92.  
  93. 3) he tells you to use a 10% volume of ether 
  94.    to extract an aqueous layer using a mason
  95.    jar.  (I've already mentioned that one
  96.    has to vent the jar frequently or you're
  97.    in for a big surprise).  He then suggest
  98.    *siphoning* the ether off with no more
  99.    explanation that that.  Quite a nifty
  100.    trick for such a small volume, for an
  101.    amateur.  Sounds like he's just speculating.

  103. 4) DeKorne fails to mention the emulsion layer,
  104.    the bane of many the home extractor.  He
  105.    also hasn't bothered to explain his methods
  106.    with a few good clarifying diagrams.

  108. 5) Mentions the use of Draino as a substitute
  109.    for NaOH, without mentioning the little
  110.    pieces of aluminum turnings in Draino.
  111.  
  112. 6) for the example using San Pedro cactus,
  113.    DeKorne says "filtrate" when he means
  114.    "residue".
  115.  
  116. 6) DeKorne says that you need three weeks
  117.    to do an extraction.  Ha!
  118.  
  119. 7) DeKorne suggests multiple freezing and 
  120.    thawings to break down the cell structure.
  121.    Doesn't mention that the active alkaloids
  122.    might not survive this method, or might
  123.    survive at a much lower potency.  Far 
  124.    better to dry and powder, or blenderize,
  125.    in my opinion.  See the alt.d FTP site
  126.    for tried and true quality extraction
  127.    procedures.  They're in the "Australian
  128.    Natural Highs" FAQ and the "Chemical
  129.    Extraction" FAQ.

  131. 8) He doesn't stress enough the flammability
  132.    danger of ethyl ether vapours.

  139. information contained in this book."

  141. Kinda about sums it up, wouldn't you say?

  143. Both HT and PI gave this book a good review.
  144. Says a lot about their level of knowledge.
